Email Open and Click Tracking
Seeing whether your emails were opened and links clicked — and the POPIA choice behind turning it on.
What this is
A setting that records whether an email you sent was opened, and whether any links in it were clicked. It works through a small invisible image and rewritten links — served from Allsorts CRM itself, not a third-party analytics service.
Off by default. Find it under Settings → Automation → Track email opens and clicks.
Why it's off until you turn it on
Recording whether someone opened an email is processing their personal information under POPIA — their behaviour, tied to their identity. That's not something a tool should decide for you. It's a genuine choice with a genuine obligation attached, and defaulting it on would be making that choice on your behalf.
If you turn it on, the same POPIA responsibilities that apply to any personal data you hold apply here: a lawful basis for processing it, and honesty if someone asks what you know about their interactions with you. See POPIA and Your CRM Data for the fuller picture.
What gets tracked, and how
- Opens — a 1×1 invisible image loads when the email is displayed. Many mail clients block images by default, so opens are a signal, not a certainty — someone can read an email without it registering.
- Clicks — links in the email route through a short redirect first, which records the click before sending the person on to the real destination. They land exactly where the link said, just a fraction of a second later.
- The unsubscribe link is never tracked. Making someone's opt-out depend on a tracking redirect would undermine the point of having one.
Where it applies
Once turned on, tracking is added automatically to:
- Emails logged from a contact or lead's Email Log
- Bulk email sent from the Contacts page
- Email sequence steps
Every one of these already carries your signature and unsubscribe link — tracking is layered onto the same email, not a separate thing.
Where to see the results
Right now, tracking data lives on the email itself — whether it was opened and clicked. A dedicated report is on the list for later; today, it's most useful as a signal in the moment: did that quote follow-up actually get opened before you pick up the phone.
Turning it off
Flip the setting back off any time. Emails already sent keep whatever data they already recorded; nothing new is tracked from that point.
